Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

PAEMST is the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching. Established by Congress in 1983, the PAEMST program authorizes the President to bestow up to 108 awards each year.

Recipients of the award receive the following:

  • a certificate signed by the President of the United States.
  • a paid trip for two to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities.
  • a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

In addition to recognizing outstanding teaching in mathematics or science (including computer science), the program provides teachers with an opportunity to build lasting partnerships with colleagues across the nation. This growing network of award-winning teachers serves as a vital resource for improving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and keeping America globally competitive.

Progressions in Fractions for Teachers Grades 3-5
This course highlights the progression of fraction standards in grades 3-5. Participants will build from a foundation of how a student's development of fractional thinking in grades K-2 leads the way to building a strong conceptual and representational understanding in grades 3-5. Through engaging in reading research, mathematical tasks, discussion posts, and viewing videos of teaching practice, participants will link operation sense within whole numbers to fractions and solidify their understanding of visual fraction models. Participants will deepen their passion for math and develop ways to promote a growth mindset with students.

Online, 1.0 SUU or Utah State Board of Education (USBE) credit hour
Instructors: Melissa Garber and Elizabeth Felt

Progressions in Place Value for Teachers Grades K-2
Place value is an essential foundation in mathematics. Young mathematicians build understanding through counting, familiarity with the base-ten system, and applying their understanding to the operations of addition and subtraction. This course, specifically designed for the kindergarten, first, and second grade teachers offers this essential place value content in addition to research-based pedagogy, and a compilation of valuable resources.

Online, 1.0 SUU or USBE credit hour
Instructors: Lise Welch and Megan Erickson

Secondary Mathematics Courses

Courses are available to provide professional learning opportunities to teachers that help improve their teaching and pedagogy. The courses offer USBE Credit, professional development credit, or the choice of one or the other.

Professional Learning Series

USBE is offering a number of courses in secondary mathematics content areas to provide 6-12 educators with opportunities to extend their professional learning. The Professional Learning Series will be offered in an online interface via Utah Education Network (UEN) and in person at various local districts throughout the school year.
