Overview

The Child Care Center portion of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) assists child care centers, before-and-after-school programs, Head Start programs, and emergency shelters in providing nutritious meals and snacks to children from birth through 12 years of age, 15 years old for children of migrant workers, and through 18 years for CACFP Emergency Shelters. Youth with disabilities that require care and are in a center where most children are 18 years old and younger also receive meal benefits.

Qualifying and Applying

Child Care Centers must provide nonresidential care services (except emergency shelters), and be licensed or approved to operate by state, local, or Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) child care standards. They may either participate independently, as a sponsored facility, or as an organization that sponsors the food program at other facilities.

The first part of the application process involves participation in CACFP Basic Training. This can be done in-person or online.

Reimbursement Rates

Reimbursement is provided to qualifying child care centers based on meals served to children at the established free, reduced, and paid rate depending on the eligibility of the child or adult served. Sponsors of Head Start/Early Start and emergency/homeless shelters are reimbursed at the federally established free rate for meals served to eligible participants.

Reimbursement Claims

Claims are due no later than the fifth working day of the month (to receive a payment by the end of that month).

Claims must be submitted:

  • No later than 60 days from the end of the month being claimed

Once a claim has been submitted:

    • You can amend the claim within 60 days of the close of the claim month to be eligible for reimbursement
    • You can amend at any time if you are claiming fewer meal
