Prevention and At-Risk Programs

The Utah State Board of Education Prevention and At-Risk Programs provide resources and supports in the schools in the areas of attendance, bullying, child abuse, gangs, human trafficking, substance abuse, and suicide, built on a foundation of restorative practices. By promoting wellness for the whole child, this team contributes to the Utah State Board of Education's vision of preparing each child to be college, career, and community ready upon graduation.

Safe and Healthy Schools

The Utah State Board of Education Safe and Healthy Schools, in coordination with all stakeholders, has made Safe and Healthy Schools a board priority. The Utah framework for school safety includes 8 Conditions that schools may follow to create comprehensive safe and healthy school policies, plans, protocols, and partnerships.

School Counseling Program Listservs

School counseling program listservs is one method School Counseling Program Specialist use for communicating with school counselors across the state of Utah. It is recommended that elementary school counselors sign up for all three Utah Education Network (UEN) listservs. It is recommended that secondary school counselors sign up to receive both the Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program Information and the Resources for School Counselors. Trauma-Sensitive Schools Professional Development

Through online coursework via Canvas, the Trauma-Sensitive Schools Professional Development follows a Trauma-Skilled Schools Model (National Dropout Prevention Center, 2018) and is delivered in the following three phases:

  • Phase 1: Trauma-Informed Learning Modules
  • Phase 2: Trauma-Responsive Learning Modules
  • Phase 3: Trauma-Sensitive Schools Implementation and Maintenance Learning Modules

Utah Microcredentials

A microcredential is a digital form of certification indicating demonstrated competency of a specific skill. Microcredentials give the learner three things: visible recognition of demonstrated competency, leadership opportunities, and USBE credit. Microcredentials in areas of Social Emotional Learning, Trauma-Informed Practices, Equity Literacy (including the Supporting American Indian/Alaska Native Students badge as outlined in the Assurances of the School Counseling Program Performance Review), etc. could potentially benefit the professional advancement for school counselors.
