Health education, integral to the success of students in Utah’s educational setting, provides opportunities for students to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for life-long, health-enhancing behaviors. Schools can better achieve their basic educational mission if students are healthy and fit physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Habits that young people establish will affect their future health status in a positive or negative manner. Schools share the responsibility with parents and communities to help prevent unnecessary injury, disease, and chronic health conditions that lead to a low quality of life, disability, or early death.
The Utah Health Education Core Curriculum emphasizes developing positive, life-long, health-related attitudes and behaviors. Although these attitudes and behaviors begin in the home, the school, in partnership with local school boards and community agencies, can provide support and reinforcement for parents and families. The primary goal of health education in the state of Utah is to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors essential to become health-literate. A health-literate person understands the medically accurate principles of health promotion, and disease prevention and is able to apply the knowledge to personal attitudes and behaviors that support healthy living.

University of Utah College of Health Nutrition and Integrative Physiology: Clinical and Community Outreach
The Utah Center for Community Nutrition has created curriculum designed to motivate groups to take action to reduce their sugar consumption, increase their physical activity, and eat more fresh healthy food. Correlating with this curriculum is the film “Sugar Babies: The Bittersweet Truth About Diabetes.” DVD’s are available at no cost to health teacher.
Utah Newborn Safe Heaven
The state of Utah enacted the Newborn Safe Haven Law in 2001. The Newborn Safe Haven Law allows desperate parents to anonymously relinquish an infant in a safe, legal and confidential manner at any hospital in the state of Utah.
Each day over a 1000 people in the United States suffer a heart attack. Sadly, only 12% of those individuals are likely to survive. Immediate High School Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use can triple the rate of survival but not enough people know how to perform effective CPR or use an AED.
With support from the Utah State Legislature, American Heart Association, and the Utah Department of Health, the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) will provide a reimbursement of $6.00 per pupil specifically for the high-quality CPR and the use of an AED. These funds are available 2017-2018 school year. This is specifically for hands-on training in proper use of CPR/AED, not certification.
These funds support high school Health classes. Districts must apply by October 1, 2018 for these per pupil funds. Funds will be distributed twice a year through the reimbursement process.
As of November 1, 2018 the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) has approved the 90 Day Public Review period of the Draft Health Education Core Standards. During this time all members of the public are invited to utilize one or both of the following options to provide feedback. Those options include five public meetings (the times and locations are detailed below), and an online survey. Please review the draft of the Utah Core Standards for Health Education prior to submitting feedback. Thank you for your contribution to Utah Health Education.
