Welcome to Instructional Materials Center (IMC)

The purpose of state recommendation of instructional materials is to provide the schools of the state the very best available core-related materials and to eliminate instructional materials that violate Utah Administrative Code or Utah State Board Rules.

The recommendation process also provides for consistent contract pricing for recommended materials. Utah reviews and approves materials on a semiannual basis, once in the Fall and once in the Spring.

Utah's Review Process

The Instructional Materials Adoption Process in Utah maintains local autonomy in the choice of instructional materials by providing a general list of approved materials. The adoption process also establishes, by contracting with each publisher, a price for instructional materials to be maintained throughout the adoption period, thus providing equality for each school district. This system provides the best instructional materials at the lowest price for Utah's students.

Curriculum Materials

Rubrics are prepared by Curriculum Specialists in the Utah State Board of Education, in cooperation with subject area specialists in districts and schools throughout the state in order to provide a simple way for reviewers to evaluate instructional materials. The major focus of the rubrics will be the core for the designated course, but the rubrics will also address issues such as equity, material quality and construction, adherence to Utah law, and other appropriate issues. The rubrics are used to help guide the narratives composed for Recommended Instructional Materials System (RIMS).
