Janet Cannon and her husband, Jeff, are parents of three beautiful girls and two handsome boys, all products of Utah Public Schools. As a mother of one intellectually-gifted and at the same time learning-disabled child, Janet has continually advocated for improvements within our system of public education. Her life-long mission is to be an advocate for children. That mission continues as seven grandchildren have joined the family, including one challenged with Down’s syndrome.
Child advocacy led Cannon to many years working in PTA on a local, regional and state level. For several years she chaired and served on the Nominating Committee to select members of the SITLA (State Institutional Trust Lands) Board — seeking experts who would build the permanent fund that sends Trustlands dollars to each school. She was recruited to run for the State Board of Education by community members interested in education. While serving as Vice Chair for the Board, she developed and wrote its bylaws. She also developed a process for the State Board to receive more public input.
Cannon was elected Area Director over the Western States in NASBE (National Association of State Boards of Education). Later she received their national award for Outstanding Leadership and Service. She has served as a Regent on the State Board of Regents, as liaison between the State Board and the State Charter School Board, and on the UCAT Board of Trustees.
