Sec. 5, Shortcut for Scheduling Segments

Identical course sections that are scheduled in the same period but on different cycle days are called "segments."  Sec. 4 explains how segments can be scheduled one cycle day at a time by the drag-and-drop method. However, the shortcut feature outlined in this section allows the user to schedule a segment to all cycle days of a period simultaneously using a variation of drag-and-drop.

5.1 Drag-and-drop
Instead of dragging and dropping a course onto a cell in the grid, drop it on the row header that designates the period code in the left most column (Fig. 21). Whenever this action is taken the program will prepare to schedule all cycle days in the target period with the same segment. What happens next will depend on whether or not this is the first time this course has been scheduled in the selected track.

If sections already exist -
If there are already some scheduled sections for the course being scheduled, the 'Add New' screen (Fig. 22) will appear before the 'Section/Segment Information' screen appears. Here, the user must decide if the segments to be scheduled will be based on a new course section entirely or derived from an existing course section.

  • Add New Section -

  • If the new segments are to be based on a new course section, simply click the Add New Section command button. The 'Section/Segment Information' screen (Fig. 8) will appear with the next available section number in sequential order displayed in the Section field. Use the Tab key to move from field to field. Enter Section/Segment attributes. When this record is saved in the next steps, the schedule grid will display identical course segments across all cycle day columns in the grid (Fig. 24).

  • Add Segment

  • If the new segments will be based on an existing section, select the root course section from the list in the left and then click on the Add Segment command button. Since most of the attributes of segments are likely to be identical (but not necessarily), the 'Section/Segment Information' screen will be skipped in this procedure and the view will revert directly to the schedule grid. Identical segments will be displayed across all cycle day columns in the grid for the target period, showing the same course ID number and hyphenated section number as the root course section (Fig. 25). The segments have now been successfully scheduled without any further steps required. However, if any segment attributes need to be altered, open the 'Edit Master Schedule' screen for the target cell in the grid by activating the edit mode (See Sec. 8)

5.2 Edit Course Section/Segment attributes
If a new section was added in the previous step, the 'Section/Segment Information' screen (Fig. 8) will appear displaying data for the course being scheduled. (If the Add Segment command was chosen in the previous step, skip to Step 5.4.) Much of the default data displayed in these fields are the course attributes that were defined for the course in the District Courses program and the Course Selection Editor. Some of this default data may be edited as the segment is being created. For more details on data fields, see Step 3.1.2.

5.3 Save Data
After completing Section/Segment attributes, click on Save to post the data, or Undo to cancel the scheduling. Use the Done command to exit the dialog with the option of saving or discarding the data.

5.4 View Scheduled Segments
After saving with the shortcut method, segments will now be displayed in the schedule grid across all cycle days in the target period. The hyphenated section numbers assigned will depend on the status of existing course sections and actions taken by the user.
