Food Service Glossary
- Account
- Consumer account, which consists of (student) pay-type
status records, meal records, payment records, and ala Carte records. Cash
and Visitor records are also located in Accounts
- Account status
- The status of the student's application--approved, denied,
temporary approved. See Add Application/Application Head.
- Accounts/Payments
- Page 2 of student Account, contains payment records for
the selected student.
- Accounts/Permissions
- Page 4 of student Account, allows permissions to be set
for each student, such as charge to account y/n, charge ala carte y/n.
- Accounts/Service
- Page 3 of student Account, contains service records for
the selected student.
- Accounts/Status
- Page 1 of student Account. Contains account status records
for free/reduced/paid eligibility.
- Ala carte
- 1) Food items which are sold in addition to complete
meals. 2) One of three Food Type options required
when entering an ala carte item (see Ala Carte Rates/Food Types)
- Applicant
- Acts in a legal capacity on behalf of the child by applying
for free/reduced meal eligibility. May or may not be a household member.
Considered to be a Student Contact, type Food Services Applicant. See Applications/Add
Application/Application Body/Applicant.
- Application Base
- The bottom portion of the application which remains constant
while paging through the body of the application. Contains the Calculate
function and displays results of calculation. See Applications/Add Application/Application
Base.
- Application Letters
- Approved/Denied/Temporary/Verification letters created
as per results of application status. See Applications/File/Letter Templates
to edit text. See Food Services/Reports/File to set verification draw parameters.

- ASB Accounting
- Main student accounting system, of which Food Services
is one component. Meals and Ala carte Food Type items are
processed through Food Services accounting and then to ASB accounting.
Snack Food Type items are processed directly through ASB accounting.
- Calculate
- Located in Application Base. Compares Household Students,
Household Members, Household Income to Child Nutrition Income Guidelines.
Designates status of application as approved or denied, pay type as free/reduced/regular.
Approved status may be adjusted to Temporary Approved. Displays total HH
size, calculates/displays monthly income fyi
- Category
- The Meal Rate Category, which may be a complete Meal,
Milk Only, Worker meal, Guest meal, or a Snack.
- Date-ala carte item
- Records date ala carte item is entered or edited. Defaults
to system date (today's date). Not editable.
- Defaults-enter
ala carte items
- Selections which may be preset to facilitate data entry.
Defaults are set in "Edit Defaults" in Ala Carte Rates. Default
entries are proposed entries only and may always be changed for individual
ala carte items.
- Description
- Refers to ala carte item description. The description
is user defined, appears on reports and on the terminal display.
- Direct Certification
- Notification that a household qualifies for free/reduced
meals due to participation in program such as AFDC. Bypasses application
requirements (except program numbers) if checked on application. See Applications/Add
Application/Application Head.
- Effective
Date-Application
- Pay type "as of" date as per the governing
application. First day in eligibility figures for that pay type.
- Eligibility
- Household pay type status according to federal Child
Nutrition Income Guidelines which qualify a student to receive free or
reduced meals.
- Expire Date-Application
- Pay type "expire day" as per the governing
application. Counts as final day for that pay type.
- Find
- Present in Accounts and Applications. Locates students
by name (first, last, partial) or number (whole/partial). See Accounts.
Locates Applications by applicant, student or number. See Applications/Find
an Application.
- Food Item
- Check box present on the Accounts page of Ala Carte Rates.
Also present in ASB Accounting to allow food and non-food items to be entered
into the accounting system. Designates this item as a food item. Defaults
to "on" when viewed from within Food Services and may not be
edited.
- Food Type-Ala carte
- One to three types available to classify an ala carte
item. Food Type of ala carte applies to items prepared onsite, such as
a chef salad or french fries, items which are not easily inventoried as
purchased "as-is" from a vendor.
- Food Type-Meal
- One to three types available to classify an ala
carte item. Food Type of Meal applies to an ala carte item which qualifies
as a reimbursable meal.
- Food Type-Snack
- One to three types available to classify an ala carte
item. Food Type of Snack applies to an ala carte item which is purchased
from a vendor and is easily inventoried, such as a snack bag of potato
chips purchased by the case. Items with a Food Type of Snack are inventoried
directly through ASB Accounting.
- Free-ala carte
- Part of the pricing structure for ala carte items. Allows
the option of setting a price other than "Full" for the sale
of this item to a student approved for Free Lunch/Breakfast.
- Full-ala carte
- The regular full-pay price for the ala carte item.
- Group
- The sub-account within the school's main ASB Food Services
Account. Further identifies the ala carte item as sold during lunch, breakfast,
snack bar, office, etc.
- Guest
- A Meal Rate category which allows a price to be set specifically
for guest meals.
- Household Members
- Any person living in the household in addition to household
students.. See Applications/Add Application/Application Body/Household
Members.
- Inactive Application
- An inactive application is excluded from all reports
and calculations. See Applications/Inactivate an Application for requirements
and procedures.
- Income Table
- Contains Federal Child Nutrition Eligibility Income Guidelines
for free/reduced meals. See Applications/File/Income Table.
- Inventory
- Inventory is maintained by ASB Accounting. TBA
- Item
- An ala carte food item.
- Item ID
- User-defined alpha/numeric identifier needed when entering
an ala carte item.
- Login
- User name and password used when launching SIS 2000+.
Each user is assigned Permissions which grant access to specific modules
and functions. User may be granted access to the local SIS 2000+ only,
or may have access to multiple school sites on a wide-area network.
- Meal
- Refers to a reimbursable whole meal.
- Meal Rate
- The price charged for a reimbursable meal.
- Meal Type-Breakfast
- Refers to service provided for Breakfast
- Meal Type-Lunch
- Refers to service provided for Lunch
- Minimum Quantity
- Optional category used when entering an ala carte item,
used for inventory purposes with ASB Accounting.
- New Year Initialize
- New Year procedure which sets Free/Reduced pay types
for continuing students to Temporary Free/Reduced for the new year. Archives
original applications, and creates new applications for temporary status.
Sets all other student pay types to Normal (paid/regular). See Accounts/Menu
Bar/Tools.
- Notes
- Optional text windows to record journal entries for each
pay type. See Accounts/Account Status.
- Nutrition
- Permits nutritional analysis of an ala carte item--referenced
when calculating an aggregate sale of ala carte items to possibly qualify
as a reimbursable meal.TBA
- On Hand
- Optional category used when entering an ala carte item,
used for inventory purposes with ASB Accounting
- Patron
- An individual who participates in the Food Services program
on a regular or semi-regular basis (enough to justify maintaining an account)
but who is not included in school enrollment. A Patron may an adult, a
child or a student. Student Patrons may be Free, Reduced or Regular. Examples
of Patrons might be children enrolled in a pre-school program such as Headstart,
or spouses of employees. Patron meal service is reported separately from
the school's meal service, patron totals are by category, and patron service
is included in school totals.
- Pay Type
- Free/Reduced/Paid (Normal, Regular)
- Pay-Type-Free
- Refers to the pay-type status of students approved by
application to receive free meals as authorized by the Federal Child Nutrition
Act.
- Pay-Type-Normal
- Refers to the pay-type status of students who pay full
price for breakfast and lunch meals.
- Pay-Type-Reduced
- Refers to the pay-type status of students approved by
application to receive meals at a reduced priced as authorized by the Federal
Child Nutrition Act.
- Per Person
- See Income Table. Per person is the amount to add to
income figure for each additional household member exceeding the household
size shown on federal income guidelines.
- Permissions
- Refers to levels of SIS 2000+ system access granted to
a user
- POS
- Point-of-Sale. POS sites are locations where food services
is provided, such as the cafeteria, snack bar, a pizza stand, or the bookstore.
POS equipment refers to hardware that processes point-of-sale transactions.
- Program
- AFDC, Food Stamps, ADPIR. See Applications/Add Application/Household
Students.
- Rate-Adult
- Part of the Meal Rate pricing structure that identifies
a meal as charged at the visiting adult rate.
- Rate-Child
- Part of the Meal Rate pricing structure that identifies
a meal as charged at the visiting child rate.
- Rate-Faculty
- Part of the Meal Rate pricing structure that identifies
a meal as charged at the faculty rate.
- Rate-Student
- Part of the Meal Rate pricing structure that identifies
a meal as charged at the student rate (which may be free, reduced or regular).
- Reduced-ala carte
- Part of the pricing structure for ala carte items. Allows
the option of setting a price other than "Full" for the sale
of this item to a student approved for Reduced prices for Lunch/Breakfast.
- Reimbursement
- Optional field in Meal Rates that allows the % reimbursement
for serving #1 of this meal.
- Replace Application
- See Applications/Edit an Application.
- School
- School ID#. Inserts automatically when a student is added
to application. See Applications/Add Application/Household Students.
- Serving 1 & 2
- Required field in Meal Rates that sets the amount charged
for serving #1 and serving #2. Serving #2 may be unused if not applicable.
"Free" rates must contain an entry of "0.00" (not left
blank).
- Shortcut key
- Refers to the physical location of an ala carte item
on the template of the point-of-sale terminal. When an item is assigned
a shortcut key, using that location on the terminal references the assigned
item for description, price etc.
- Snack
- See Food Type-Snack
- Tax %
- Sales tax rate assessed on the sale of an ala carte item.
- Terminal
- Point-of-sale equipment
- Type
- Meal Rate category identifies "to whom" this
meal is served--Faculty, Patron, Student, Visitor
- Unit Description
- Optional field used when entering an ala carte item,
refers to TBA
- Visitor
- An anonymous, occasional meal recipient. A Visitor may
be a child or an adult.
- Worker
- An individual who receives a meal in exchange for services.
Any Type of meal (student, faculty, patron, visitor) may be rated as a
worker meal. A worker meal is charged in accordance with local policy.
If worker meals are free in exchange for services, set the price at "0.00".
Worker meals are reported separately, totals are included in school service
totals. Adult and child patron meals are reported separately from student
meals. Student/Patron worker meals are recorded in the proper student/patron
categories for free, reduced and regular.
