Utah's 40 School Districts

Utah serves nearly 480,000 students in 40 school districts. Each district manages local school matters under the direction of a district school board. The district school board makes decisions and sets and implements policies within the framework set by the Utah Legislature and the Utah State Board of Education.

With the exception of Salt Lake City School District, each district school board is composed of five citizens, each representing the local area (precinct) where they reside. (Salt Lake City School District has seven board members.) District board members are elected by residents living in their precincts. Each member serves a four-year term, and elections are staggered every two years. Members can serve an unlimited number of terms.

Generally, each district school board defines the district's goals and priorities, approves programs and methods for achieving those goals, secures funding and resources for school operating costs and needs, decides how funds and resources will be used, and expresses and represents the education views of its community.

The district superintendent ensures that the policies of the district school board are carried out. As the chief executive officer of the district school board, he or she directs the district staff and advises the district school board on all school issues. The district school board selects and appoints the superintendent.
