Utah Geological Survey
Services To School Districts
Revised August 25, 2003
To ensure that geologic hazards are considered at all proposed school sites, the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) recommends the following steps be taken at the appropriate stage in the site-selection and approval process:
Prior to Purchase or Design
The UGS will perform an initial “screening” for geologic hazards at potential sites and identify, in a letter report, any constraints that should be considered in decisions to purchase or develop a site. Cost: $500 for 1 site, $700 for multiple sites in same area; additional costs (travel expenses and hourly charge at $36/hour) may be incurred if a site visit is necessary.
During Site Design
Once a site is chosen, require that the geo-technical consultant include in their geo-technical investigation a complete site-specific geologic-hazards evaluation. If the UGS performed an initial site screening, the screening report should be submitted to the consultant so that identified hazards are evaluated as a part of the site-specific evaluation.
Final Site Approval
Submit the geo-technical consultant’s report to the UGS for review. The UGS will evaluate the adequacy of the report and submit a review letter with checklist to the school district recommending either approval or further work. Cost: $450; additional costs (travel expenses and hourly charge of $36/hour) may be incurred if site visit or extensive follow-up are necessary.
