Great Opportunities for Teachers

Great opportunities for teachers, often free of charge, cross my desk on a regular basis. Teachers have begun sending in pictures and stories from their trips. Here is what a few have said:

Gilder Lehrman Summer Institute: "The Idea that Is America," held at the Woodrow WIlson Presidential Library in Staunton, Virginia. Utah educators Shanna Campbell of Weber District and Pam Su'a of Jordan District were among those selected to attend.

Pam writes "This was a great seminar! We spent four days with Dr. Slaughter and had access to the Woodrow Wilson presidential papers collection and the museum, which is located at his birthplace and home for the first year of his life (they call it the formative year). Following our week, Dr. Slaughter appeared on "The Colbert Report." I'd like to believe we helped prepare her for that experience."

Here are links to some opportunities:

This link will take you to the application process for an institute that explores the role of the Supreme Court and helps you learn about cases, develop lessons about the Supreme Court, and meet with key players in the confirmation process for Justices. You will even be in the Supreme Court when decisions are announced.

This link is to the GIlder Lehrman Institute of American History. How would you like to spend a week studying Lincoln with premiere historians, all expenses paid, on site in Gettysburg, or studying the Cold War at Cambridge University in the U. K.? Need I say more?

Gilder Lehrman also sponsors the annual History Teacher of the Year Award. This year nominations will be accepted for teachers who focus on US History in the secondary grades. Nomination information will be available soon.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Teacher Fellowship Program is developing a national corps of skilled secondary school educators who serve as leaders in Holocaust education. Museum Teacher fellows will participate in a five-day, all-expense paid summer institute at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., designed to immerse participants in advanced historical and pedagogical issues. Study in Germany with all expenses paid. Deadline is February 1.

I also get recommendations from teachers, and welcome them. Here are some recent additions.
