Endorsements

In order to teach in Utah, a teacher must be licensed, and have the endorsements required for course assignments. In social studies, there are nine endorsements: history, geography, economics, political science, anthropology, sociology, psychology, Utah studies, and the social studies composite.

All endorsements require a minimum of college coursework or equivalent professional development experiences. Under new rules, endorsements in the NCLB areas of history, geography, economics, and government and civics also require the successful passage of the PRAXIS assessment.

College coursework undertaken as part of the general undergraduate course of study can usually be counted toward endorsement requirements if the coursework fulfills the course requirements and was earned with a grade of C or better. Recency is also taken into consideration.
