Classification schemes reflect orderly patterns and observable diferences between objects and organisms. One of the most visible differences is between plants and animals. Structural features are more important for classifying organisms than their behavior or general appearance. Earth materials are classified based on structure. Chemists classify matter based on structure. Like other areas of science, classification systems may change as science develops new knowledge. Explore now how scientists group things.
