One of the common characteristics that scientists have is the ability to solve problems. Solving problems involves the following steps:

• Identify the problem in the form of a question.
• Form a hypothesis which is a possible solution to the question. The hypothesis is based on prior knowledge and observations.
• Test their hypothesis by planning and carrying out an investigation.
• Display results by using graphs, tables, diagrams etc.
• Prepare a written summary or conclusion to show if their hypothesis was correct or not.

In this unit you have been studying about microorganisms. You will be required to plan and conduct an experiment to determine a microorganism’s requirements in a specific environment. If you recall, microorganisms need certain things to live. Some of these requirements are: food, water, air, waste disposal, temperature of the environment, and reproduction. Can you think of a question about microorganisms that you could answer by doing an experiment?
