Investigation

Once your hypothesis is finished, it must be tested by setting up a scientific experiment. A controlled experiment is one good way to test your hypothesis. Scientists (you) will test only one factor (variable) at a time in an experiment. This will make it easier to get a clear result. You will also need to include a control in your experiment. The experiment set-up below will help show how an experiment can be set up using the milk example.

After you have the experiment figured out, then you need to make a list of materials that you will need and collect them.

Materials:

  • 2 plastic soda bottles and lids
  • Milk
  • Refrigerator
  • Celsius Thermometer

Procedure:

  1. Fill each container half way with milk and put the lids on.
  2. Place one bottle in the refrigerator and the other at room temperature (counter).
  3. After three days, observe the milk in each bottle.
  4. Smell the milk in each bottle.
  5. Record the temperature of the milk in both bottles.
  6. Keep a record of your observations.
