Activity Description:
Students will research the plants
and animals found in Utah. (grasslands, desert, forest, wetland). They will
then use this information to create a paper model of their ecosystem.
Materials Needed:
1 copy per group of pages 4 - 6 from
the TRB, Activity #3 (Plants and Animals 3040.01 Activity #3) or books showing
pictures of Utah animals, white and colored construction paper, scissors,
markers, crayons, glue, and books on ecosystems found in Utah. If
classroom computers are available, this would make an excellent power point
presentation for students.
Prior to Assessment:
Students should have learned that
there are four Utah ecosystems and that each contains characteristic plants and
animals.
Time Needed For Assessment:
1 - 2 class periods
Procedure:
1. Students will work together in groups of four to research the Utah environments, forest, desert, or wetland.
2. Each member of the group
will work on one of the four ecosystems, so that
the whole group will have a
complete model of all four.
3. Students will be required
to include at least 3 plants and animals found
in that ecosystem.
The completed poster should
include: Ecosystem name, average rainfall and
elevation, 3 plants, and 3
animals.
Scoring Guide:
(1 point for each, total of 10)
Name of ecosystem 3
animals (1 point for each)
Average rainfall 3
plants (1 point for each)
