TOPIC: STRUCTURE

Standard 3620-01: Students will investigate the nature of atoms.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0101 Evaluate evidence for particulate nature of matter.

    • The Learning Matters of Chemistry--Movies and Graphics - Millikan's oil drop experiment, Bohr model and much more. (Some are very large but worth it.)

  • 3620-0102 Correlate the position of elements on the periodic table with their atomic structure.

    • Web Elements - Periodic Tables--These are excellent!
    • Chemicool Periodic Table--This interactive Periodic Table has detailed information on all elements, with just a click of the button!
    • Periodic TableTris!--Learn the Periodic Table elements with this Tetris-style game. Requires at least Netscape 2.0 and the Shockwave plugin to play.

Standard 3620-02: Students will understand nuclear and quantum phenomena.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0201 Explain the need for various models of the atom.

    • Atomic Structure Timeline--

  • 3620-0202 Gather evidence to explain photon emissions in terms of quantum jumps of electrons.

  • 3620-0203 Explain the production (e.g., mass energy conversion) and effects of nuclear energy.
    • Comparison of Fission and Fusion Processes

TOPIC: INTERACTION

Standard 3620-03: Students will investigate and infer physical and chemical properties of substances based on chemical bonding and periodic tendencies.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0301 Examine and identify physical and chemical properties of molecules related to bond types.

    • Chemical Bonding Information--A short text on the basics of chemical bonding.

  • 3620-0302 Use nomenclature schemes to name inorganic compounds.

Standard: 3620-04: Students will investigate chemical reactions.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0401 Verify and model the law of conservation of mass in a chemical reaction.

    • Interactive Tutorial on Balancing Equations by Yue-Ling Wong, Ph. D. (Requires Shockwave). See more of Dr. Wong's projects.

  • 3620-0402 Investigate evidences of energy transformations in a chemical reaction.
    • A Thermometric Titration Lab

Standard 3620-05: Students will determine and quantify regulating factors in chemical systems.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0501 Identify variables and predict relative changes in equilibrium of a chemical reaction.

  • 3620-0502 Quantify factors which control the rate of chemical reactions (e.g., temperature, pH, concentration, catalysts) and determine their effects.

    • Surface Area and Rate of Reaction

TOPIC: QUANTIFICATION AND ANALYSIS

Standard 3620-06: Students will apply concepts of concentration to analyze solutions.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0601 Determine concentration of solutions and express in units of molarity, percentage concentration (percentage as mass/mass, mass/volume, or volume/volume) and parts per million (ppm, mg/Kg).

  • 3620-0602 Determine and express concentration of a solution in units of pH.

    • Interactive Titration Simulation--Determine the concentration of a 50.0 mL solution of weak acid, for example, acetic acid, by titration using a 0.100M of NaOH(aq) as titrant. (Requires Shockwave.)

  • 3620-0603Relate concentration to colligative properties of solutions.

Standard 3620-07: Students will use a variety of analytical procedures to answer relevant problems in chemistry.

Objectives:

  • 3620-0701 Experimentally test a hypothesis using volumetric titration.

  • 3620-0702 Experimentally test a hypothesis using chromatography.

  • 3620-0703 Quantitatively investigate electron flow in chemical reactions.
