English Language Learners (ELL)

Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE)

Teachers will learn to use Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) to teach content English and to make content comprehensible to all students. Teachers must be registered by their Principals or Directors with Wanda Gocha at: wanda.gocha@schools.utah.gov.

Health Education

Promoting Health and Success for all Children

Physical Education Summer Camp for Elementary School Classroom Teachers

This first-ever summer camp for elementary classroom teachers will be a hands-on, learn-by-doing experience (25% exertion level!) to equip educators with the latest knowledge and strategies for delivering the revised Physical Education Core Curriculum.  Master physical educators and experts from community agencies will make presentations on sports skills, proper nutrition, non-traditional activities, integrated offerings, and personal fitness planning. Each participant will receive a $120 stipend, materials, and most meals.  There will be fun for all, so grab a friend and reserve your spot at Prospector Square for this active and informative camp. 

►REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 25, 2008. (No Exceptions)

The camp is limited to the first 150 registrants. A $50.00 check is required to hold your spot.  It will be returned at registration.

Care and Prevention of Injuries

Course Description:
This course is designed to illustrate common sports and physical education injuries, methods of prevention and standard treatment techniques.  Students will also have the opportunity to obtain their 1stAid/CPR certification card.  An assignment is required for USOE credit.

Human Sexuality/Sex Education

Course Description
This course for endorsement or professional growth emphasizes Utah law and policy and what may and may not be taught in the human sexuality portion of the health education core curriculum.  It will focus on the physical and emotional growth and development of adolescents, healthy relationships, the threat and prevention of diseases and the effective delivery of curriculum.  An assignment is required for USOE credit.

This course for endorsement or professional growth will illustrate methods of teaching Fitness for Life in Utah’s secondary schools.  It will discuss strategies of conducting a quality fitness course with individualized instruction to meet the needs of all students and will include classroom and gymnasium activities, nutrition education and  methods of  assessing all elements of physical fitness.  An assignment is required for USOE credit.

Finding Your Inspiration

3rd Annual Secondary Health and Physical Education Conference
This annual professional development conference for secondary teachers and administrators will be held at the Yarrow Hotel in Park City.  It will provide participants with the latest information on activity, nutrition and prevention education.  Teachers will receive materials, resources and strategies to enhance teaching skills.  Each participant will receive a $120 stipend to help offset teacher costs and rooms will be available at the Yarrow at the State rate.
