WHO: Cultural Survival and the National Alliance to Save Native Languages in conjunction with the National Museum of the American Indian are hosting the Second Annual National Native Language Revitalization Summit in Washington, D.C.
WHAT: On May 12 the National Museum of the American Indian will swing open its doors to advocates throughout Indian Country who are converging on our Nation’s capitol in an unprecedented effort to stem the tide of language loss. A special appearance by the last Lakota Code Talker Clarence Wolf Guts will highlight a special honoring of all Native America Code Talkers and celebrate the historic passage of the Native American Code Talkers Recognition Act of 2008. May 13 Code Talkers and Language Advocates will take to the hill a special message to Congress that Native Languages are worthy of their attention and investment.
The summit will feature exemplary language programs, and immersion schools. Darrell Kipp will offer the keynote address in addition to a special message from Ryan Wilson on the state of Native Languages on Tuesday, May 12. Miss Indian Nations XVI Alyssa Alberts will deliver a full welcoming address in the Arikara Tribal Language. Monday, May 11 features pre-summit training on Resource Development and Capacity Building for Native Language Programs facilitated by Cultural Survival.

WHY: No right is more sacred to Indian people then the right to express one’s self in the language that was gifted to them by the Creator. We alone as Indian people will determine what we carry forward to our future generations.
Tribal leaders, Indian Educators, Elders, Native Youth, Language Advocates, and Native Language Speakers are urged to attend and participate in this historic gathering.
