Bringing technology into the classroom effectively
PDF
Document
A new day is dawning in professional development for K-12technology. It's no
longer a question of teaching teachers how to use technology; it's about teaching
them when and why to use it. The reality is that the vast majority of teachers
know how to use computers-they use them regularly at home and at school to
plan lessons, correspond with friends, and conduct personal business. What
the vast majority of teachers are not doing is using computers in the classroom.
A seven page paper on how teachers can use technology in their classroom. It
really isn't that hard!
Change is Fast
PDF

In 1829, the Governor of New York, sent a letter to then president, Martin
VanBuren, complaining about the railroads impact on the Erie Canal. Whenever
change happens in our society, it is usually not seen until it is right at
the doorstep and those that refuse to embrace it will be left behind in a painful
situation. Likewise, technological change in our school is pushing teachers
and administrators to adopt new methods and materials for their classes. The
implications are no less drastic for us today.

Technology as Diversion
PDF Document
The essential question: When are new technologies worth using? New electronic
tools may bring productivity and enriched information to classrooms, but
they can also promote diversionary activities that are unworthy of a serious
teacher's limited time and attention, especially as schools gear up to
confront the NCLB juggernaut. In many
respects, the pressures on schools to "do Technology" have very
little to do with preparing students for the modern work place (despite
frequent claims to the contrary). By Jamie McKenzie © 2003, Jamie
