Resolution on Parental Involvement

 

 

 

WHEREAS, the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) believes that a child's education is a responsibility shared by school, family and community; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE recognizes that parental engagement is key to academic achievement; and

 

WHEREAS, parents and families provide the primary educational environment for children; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE recognizes that six essential elements should be promoted in order to enhance parental involvement: 

§         Interactive communication,

§         Responsible parenting,

§         Parental assistance to student learning,

§         Schools that are open and inviting to parents,

§         Partnerships between parents and schools on the decisions that affect children and families,

§         Available community resources; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE recognizes that schools and parents must work as informed, knowledgeable, and proactive partners; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE supports school districts and the schools, encouraging programs and practices that enhance parental involvement and reflect the specific needs of students and their families; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE supports the development, implementation, and regular evaluation of parent involvement programs in each school, which will involve parents at all grade levels in a variety of roles; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE supports professional development opportunities for staff members to enhance understanding of effective parent involvement strategies; and

 

WHEREAS, the USBE recognizes the importance of administrative leadership in setting expectations and creating a climate conducive to parental participation; be it therefore

 

RESOLVED, that the Utah State Board of Education encourages local programs and practices through parental involvement and participation in schools that enhance student achievement.
