Utah MESA Program
About the MESA ProgramMESA began twenty years ago as a partnership between the University of Utah and the Granite School District. At that time, there was a group of 52 students in the start-up program. Since then, MESA has grown to include nine school districts and one charter school. MESA membership is fluid and fluctuates over time. The purpose of MESA is to increase the number of under served ethnic minority and all female students who pursue course work, advanced study and possible careers in mathematics, engineering, and science areas. |

A MESA Program is composed of classes and/or clubs. Some districts offer MESA math and science courses for their students and MESA after school clubs. Other schools offer only MESA after school club activities.
Districts should have a MESA Team in each of their schools. In each school, a MESA Team should be composed, at a minimum, of a counselor, a math or science teacher, a MESA advisor, an administrator, and a community person. The team provides tutoring, counseling, leadership opportunities and motivational activities for targeted students.
Utah Constitution, Article X, Section 3, which vests general control and supervision of public education in the Utah State Board of Education, Section 53A-4-205, authorizes the MESA program. The USOE has overall supervision of the MESA program and its budget. Funding for the program is based on The Utah State Board of Education's objectives established for the program and MESA is a public education program holding membership in a consortium. Consortium members represent public education, industry, higher education, and the community. Utah State Office of Education Rule R277-717 - Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement
