How does the new law (HB 364) passed during the 2007 legislative session change what schools and school districts need to do to purchase instructional materials?
Schools need to purchase basal/core or Recommended Primary materials that have gone through an independent alignment to the Utah Core. The completed alignments are available for view in the green "Independently Aligned Materials" box on the top left-hand side of the Instructional Materials Home Page.
Can Utah schools purchase whatever they want or are they required to purchase recommended materials off the State RIMs website?
Schools may still purchase materials not listed on the State RIMs list as long as they have been reviewed and approved by their local school board. Just remember that all basal/core or Recommended Primary materials must go through the independent alignment process and be submitted to the USOE for posting on the Instructional Materials Home Page. The alignment must also be posted to the publisher webpage.
What can I do if I have a parent who is unhappy with our school (or district) selected textbook or instructional program?
Please direct the parent to your school principal or to the school district office. Most schools and school districts have local policy guiding the purchase of instructional materials.
What should I do if I find errors in my textbook?
Please contact Vali Kremer, the Instructional Materials Specialist at the State Office of Education as soon as possible about any textbook error or inaccuracy you may find.
