The focus of this conference is on making the arts simply a lovely way to œlive” at school. We will be experiencing the energy, focus, and excitement they bring to learning, and to just plain old life in general. We will see how they help us to celebrate, explore, remember, honor, create, become, serve, communicate, care, and understand.

Pre-Conference Dinner Meeting
This event is for CAUS, DAC, Grant School Representatives, UMEA, UAEA, UTA, and UDEO presidencies, and Professional Arts Organizations Education officers. This will be a meeting to bring œArts for Life” into focus. CAUS members may register for this event only, or for the entire conference. Randy McChesney will be the dinner speaker.

Thursday, November 15
Opening Session
Opening Session at the Eccles Conference Center Ballroom will feature the Keynote speaker Randy McChesney. AHEM! Smarter, nicer, eager-er children for the New Century: Brought to you by your local arts education program (and the childrenÃs brains it affects). He will open our eyes to possibilities for increasing in our children the œwant” for an education, i.e., the yearning to learn, improve, and manage themselves. He will coach us in how the arts can become the silver threads woven into the fabric of our daily lives - in the classroom, on the playground, in the neighborhood, and at home.

10:30 Am Breakouts

  • Mentor Seminar, Presenter: Loretta Niebur – Endorsement Consultant
    A breakout designed specially for mentors of endorsement candidates.
  • A School Museum, Presenter: Victoria Rowe - Nora Eccles Harrison Museum – USU. Creating a museum experience in the classroom – participants will have a chance to install a mini exhibition. Resource information will be provided.
  • ChildrenÃs Bookmaking, Presenter: Mary Wells, Guild of Bookworkers & UAEA board member. Learn how to help children make their own books. Introduction to book arts outreach program at U of U.
  • ESCAPE˜10 Easy œtrips toward the light fantastic”, Presenter: Linda Smith, Artistic Director – RDT. Rejuvenate your spirit, revitalize yourself, and use movement for enrichment.
  • Dance for Life, Presenter: Peter Christie, Education Specialist – Ballet West.
    Come feel like a child again! Experience first-hand Ballet WestÃs in-school movement program I CAN DO.
  • Mime/Actor = Life, Presenter: Jerry Gardner, Professor – U of U, Artist in Residence – Utah Arts Council. Movement, gesture, and expression to enhance our communication in life and upon the stage.
  • ItÃs Called a Play, LetÃs Play, Presenter: Michael Bahr- Utah Shakespearean Festival. Playmaking, role-playing, and interactive drama.
  • Making Music Together (Pre-K), Presenter: Julie Goodro- Master Teacher.
    Teaching music to young children.
  • Making Original Operas, Presenters: Susan Ames– Utah Festival Opera & Paula Fowler – Utah Opera. Learn how to create original operas.
  • Old wine/new skins˜, Presenter: Randy McChesney - Keynote Speaker. The parable of the old teaching model and the new childhood: What to do, how to do it, and the joy you should have in the process.

2:00 – 5 00 Vendors & Exhibits
Come see what materials are available to support instruction for purchase and network with artistic organizations that provide additional resources to help make the arts come alive in the classroom. Experience Roving Artists near Vendor/Exhibit area after keynote & during vendor time.

New in 2001:
Advanced Arts Sessions will be held at the Marriott Hotel, one in each artform. These sessions are designed for patrons who have attended the Networking Conference previously, who possess strong knowledge/skills in the artform, and for those teachers who are working on an elementary endorsement. The focus will be K-2 elementary curriculum and its application in the classroom. Endorsement mentor will be in attendance to better assist endorsement candidate in transferring theory to actual practice.

Quarterly DAC Meeting and dinner
For those patrons who serve as district arts coordinators, arts association presidents, POPS representatives and CAUS members will be held at the Marriott Hotel between 4:30 - 7 pm.

Special Presentation
Arts For Life: Reaching At Risk Students - Marriott Ballroom By Christian Moore, Founder of œWhy Try?” This workshop presentation will focus on how to apply curriculum to the different learning styles of the elementary at risk student. The character education program, "Why Try?" will be the centerpiece of the presentation. Participants will learn how it uses visual metaphors and music to reinforce what the visual metaphor shows. These
metaphors show students how to deal with today's challenges and pressures.

Friday, November 16

On Friday Morning, there will be three levels of instruction available to patrons. Please choose only one of the following:

  1. Continuation of Advanced Arts Training
  2. A 2 ½ hour Intermediate Level In-Depth Core K-6 Session
  3. Two 70-minute Introductory K-6 sessions (These sessions will repeat)

In-Depth Core Training

  • Visual Art K-6: Packing a Punch: 3-D Meets the Core, Presenter: Rebecca Wilhelm. A 3-D approach to the Core.
  • Dance K-6: ItÃs About Time, Presenters: Kathie Debenham & Margery Beaudin
    This session will have you dancing to the œRhythm of the Core.”
  • Drama K-6: Masks and Metaphor in the Elementary Grades, Presenters: Xan Johnson, Richard Kirschner, & Elaine Hansen. This session will show how to use masks and symbols in teaching.
  • Music K-6: Catch a Tune, Play a Game, Presenter: Jane Nelson. A multi-sensory approach to music education.

Introductory Sessions – Eccles Conference Center (repeated)

  • K-6 Introductory Art: Easy Steps to Creating an Art Program, Presenter: Rob Kertesz Beginning a visual art program.
  • K-6 Introductory Dance: Step Lively, Presenter: Shirley Ririe. Discovering the joy of movement in your classroom.
  • K-6 Introductory Drama: Strange Creatures are Roaming My Classroom, Presenter: Harold Oaks. Opening your classroom to something different.
  • K-6 Introductory Music: Did You Say Musical Elephants? Presenter: Vanja Watkins. Digesting musical elements one bite at a time.

Friday Afternoon Sessions
Master Teacher Demonstrations will be 60-minute sessions each. There will be two sets of Master Teacher Demonstrations. These sessions will NOT repeat.

12:40 –1:50 p.m. Master Teacher Demonstration with school children (except in the Art classes).

  • Art K-2: Creating Enthusiasm for Art, Presenter: Jerry Pacheco Enjoy Art!
  • Art 3 - 4: Art Masks Life, Presenter: Jennifer Edwards. Build a mask from natural materials based on 3 rd & 4 th grade Social Studies emphasis on native cultures.
    Use natural resources to dye fabric.
  • Dance K-3: Windows of Imagination, Presenter: Marilyn Berrett. Explore realms of the imagination through creative movement.
  • Drama 4-6: Using Drama to Expand Learning, Presenter: Mindy Young(Rocky Mtn. Elem., Alpine Distict) Act out stories to increase student learning.
  • Music 4-6: Learning Through Music, Presenter: Susan Kenney. In this demonstration with 5 th grade students, we will explore music elements through singing and playing.

12:40 – 2:40 p.m. Secondary Core Orientation

  • Art 5 – 6 New Perspectives in Visual Art, Presenter: Charles Stubbs. Art Lessons for 5 th & 6 th Graders
  • Dance 4-6 The Amazing, Moving Time Machine, Presenters: Doris Trujillo & Karla Womble The making of an ordinary sports event into an extraordinary dance.
  • Drama K-3 Imaginations in Action, Presenter: Toni Butler (Wasatch Elem. 3 rd graders, Salt Lake District) Delight in a young childÃs imagination.
  • Music K-3 Music 101, Presenter: Colleen Nicholes WeÃll take a simple song, break it apart and teach rhythm, melody, harmony, movement, and bring in instruments. WeÃll also take a listening selection and teach aspects of the Core while enjoying the
    experience.
