Incentive Grant - APIP

studentsThe Advanced Placement Incentive (API) is a pilot program designed to increase the successful participation of low-income students in pre-advanced placement and advanced placement courses and tests. Access and participation in the pre-advanced placement and advanced placement courses and tests, provide greater opportunities for low-income students to achieve high standards in English, mathematics, science, and other core subjects. Additional long- term goals of the program are to demonstrate that larger and more diverse groups of students can participate and succeed in advanced placement programs, and to increase the numbers of low-income and other disadvantaged students who receive baccalaureate and advanced degrees.

Traditionally, minority and low-income students have minimally participated in AP programs across the state. They have been unaware of the program and/or under-prepared and therefore not identified as potential candidates for AP courses. Today, there is an initiative to expand the program by emphasizing recruitment and preparation not only of low-income and minority students, but also recruiting and providing professional development for teachers.

Additionally, the University of Utah is hosting and co-sponsoring the Intermountain West's 6th Annual AP Summer Institute, August 6-10, 2007.
