Career and Technical Education Introduction (CTE Intro) offers exploration and preparation for high demand jobs and career paths that are both satisfying and financially rewarding. CTE provides grades seven through college career preparation programs covering a combination of applied and technical arts and sciences, including:

-Agriculture
-Business
-Family and Consumer Sciences
-Health Sciences and Technology
-Marketing
-Information Technology
-Technology and Engineering
-Technical Trades

The Career and Technical Education Introduction course is designed to help students identify interests, traits, and skills and connect them to effective education and career planning; all of this done at an appropriate developmental level. The students will be active learners as they sample various career tasks, utilize technology, and meet high standards of achievement. Experiences in this course ultimately help students value education and career planning and maximize individual opportunities.

EXPLORING TECHNOLOGY (7-9) - 21.0102

Exploring Technology is a comprehensive action-based educational course that introduces students to the technological systems of four of the following seven technology areas:  medical technologies, agriculture/biotechnology technologies, energy-power technologies, information and communications technologies, transportation technologies, manufacturing technologies, and construction technologies. The curriculum is designed around exploration of these systems and their impacts on society. Students will also develop problem-solving skills, improving career awareness for the Student Educational Occupational Plan (SEOP) development, and relate technology to math and science. Emphasis is placed on broad exploration in cooperative and individualized activities rather than project and skill development.

Foundations of Technology is a comprehensive action-based educational course concerned with technical means, their evolution, utilization, and significance with industry, its organization, personnel, systems, techniques, resources, and products, and their social/cultural impact. It enhances the potential of all persons to become successful and contributing participants with their technological environment so they can make rational decisions about their own lives on a day-to-day basis and participate in controlling their own destiny. It is a secondary school introduction to hands-on technology activities with emphasis placed on planning, design and problem solving. It is designed to nurture students to become technologically literate productive citizens who exhibit appropriate critical thinking and problem solving skills as they assess the technology that influences their daily lives and their future careers.

An applied physics course that is part of the Utah science core curriculum and an appropriate related course for Career and Technical Education students.

PHYSICS WITH TECHNOLOGY 2 (9-12) - 21.0106

An advanced course in applied physics developed by the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD).  The curriculum has seven components (momentum, waves and vibrations, energy converters, transducers, radiation, light and optical systems, and time constraints) based on the similar systems as Physics:  Science and Engineering.

INDUSTRIAL/AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY (9-10) - 21.0107

Industrial/Agricultural Technology (IAT) is a course designed for rural Utah schools. It is designed to give these schools with their limited staff the option of teaching a wide variety of the basics from the curriculum found in the following three program areas, Agriculture Education, Skilled and Technical Sciences Education, Technology and Engineering Education.

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (8-10) - 21.0108
Standards and Objectives - PDF
Communications Technology will teach students to create, store, analyze, manipulate, record, and transmit information through four major areas: 1) drafting and design 2) electronic communications
3)audio visual/multimedia communications and 4) graphic communications. Students will explore the impacts of communication technology on our society, and explore related careers.

INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY (8-10) - 21.0109

Construction systems provide students with an understanding of how construction impacts their life, both socially and professionally. These impacts are explored using five elements that include:

  • Career opportunities - the development of construction throughout history, the present state of construction, the future of construction, and the various types of construction enterprises.
  • Design - benefits/limitations of modern design.
  • Measurements - basic measurement principle that include applied math applications related to construction practices.
  • Tools - Common hand and power tools used in the construction industry.
  • Materials - The applications of specific materials and fasteners in construction systems.

INTRODUCTION TO MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY (8-10) - 21.0110

A hands-on course that introduces students to changing raw materials into a finished product. Examples of these materials are, but are not limited to, woods, metals, and plastics. This course will also explore the many careers associated with the manufacturing process.

INTRODUCTION TO TRANSPORTATION AND ENERGY (8-10) - 21.0111
Standards and Objectives - PDF
An introductory technology education program that introduces basic skills, applications, and impacts related to the world of transportation technology with a special emphasis given to role energy plays in that world. The different transportation systems will be explored along with energy sources used by these systems. Environmental and social impacts will be addressed along with alternative energy sources and there impacts. Understanding the relationship between transportation technology, energy and other technological systems is essential. By utilizing problem-solving skills in a laboratory environment, students will develop skills and attitudes that impact and expand occupational opportunities.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (10-12) - 21.0112
An advanced instructional course to aid site-based and pilot programs that have identified specific interdisciplinary technology education goals.  Sites may apply for approved advanced technology education program status.  Approval of specialized courses will be made individually, as needed, and based on the development of a course outline and listed competencies.  Leadership and direction of the instructional content will be provided by the state Career and Technical Education director and the Technology and Engineering Education specialist at the Utah State Office of Education.

PRE-ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (10-12) - 21.0114

Engineering scope, content, and professional practices are presented through practical applications. Students in engineering teams apply technology, science, and mathematics concepts and skills to solve engineering design problems and innovate designs. Students research, develop, test and analyze engineering designs using criteria such as design effectiveness, public safety, human factors, and ethics.

In the Engineering Design class students will study and learn the design process that is used by engineers.  They will also apply the process through the use of 3D modeling software.

MATERIALS AND PROCESSES (9-12) - 21.0116

In the Materials and Processes course students are introduced to different types of materials (e.g., iron, aluminum, plastic, composites, wood and laminates).  Students are also introduced to the different processes used with these materials.  As students study the different properties of these materials they will demonstrate the ability to use different materials and processes they have learned about to produce physical parts and products.

ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION (10-12) - 21.0117

Robotics & Automation is a lab-based, hands-on curriculum combining electrical, mechanical and engineering principles.  Students will learn to design, build, program, and control robotic devices by applying science, technology, engineering and math concepts.  A rigorous study and application of electrical concepts will include: sources of energy, electrical safety, use and identification of basic electronic components, sensors and actuators.  Engineering concepts will include: mechanical design, prototype development, design testing, programming, and proper engineer documentation.  Industrial automation, robotic applications and career opportunities will also be discussed.

A course that teaches problem-solving skills using a design development process.  Models of product solutions are created, analyzed and communicated using solid modeling computer design software.  In NYS the course is called Design and Drawing for Production and follows the syllabus developed by the State Education Department.

DIGITAL ELECTRONICS-PLTW (9-11) - 21.0121

A course in applied logic that encompasses the application of electronic circuits and devices.  Computer simulation software is used to design and test digital circuitry prior to the actual construction of circuits and devices.

A course that helps students understand the field of engineering/engineering technology.  Exploring various technology systems and manufacturing processes help students learn how engineers and technicians use math, science and technology in an engineering problem solving process to benefit people.  The course also includes concerns about social and political consequences of technological change.

COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING-PLTW (11-12) - 21.0123
Standards and Objectives - PDF
A course that applies principles of robotics and automation.  The course builds on computer solid modeling skills developed in Introduction to Engineering Design, and Design and Drawing for Production.  Students use CNC equipment to produce actual models of their three-dimensional designs.  Fundamental concepts of robotics used in automated manufacturing, and design analysis are included.

ENGINEERING DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT-PLTW (11-12) - 21.0124
Standards and Objectives - PDF
An engineering research course in which students work in teams to research, design and construct a solution to an open-ended engineering problem.  Students apply principles developed in the four preceding courses and are guided by a community mentor.  They must present progress reports, submit a final written report and defend their solutions to a panel of outside reviewers at the end of the school year.

CIVIL ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE-PLTW (11-12) - 21.0125
The major focus of the Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA) course is a long-term project that involves the development of a local property site.  As students learn about various aspects of civil engineering and architecture, they apply what they learn to the design and development of this property.  The course provides freedom to the teacher and students to develop the property as a simulation or to students to model the real-world experiences that civil engineers and architects experience with developing property.

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING-PLTW (11-12) - 14.0201
The major focus of the Aerospace Engineering (AE) course is to expose students to the world of aeronautics, flight, and engineering. Students will be introduced to the PLTW activity-based, project-based, and problem-based learning through exploring the world of aerospace engineering. Students should have experience in physics, mathematics, and technology education. They will employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of aerospace problems. The entire curriculum sequence will include experiences from the diverse fields of Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, and related areas of study. Lessons will engage students in engineering design problems related to aerospace information systems, astronautics, rocketry, propulsion, the physics of space science, space life sciences, the biology of space science, principles of aeronautics, structures and materials, and systems engineering.
