Developing Future Leaders In Marketing And  Management

Marketing Education
Course Information

Students taking any marketing classes should have the opportunity to Marketing Education Logo participate in the DECA organization, a student marketing leadership association. DECA-related activities and curricula can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

ADVERTISING & PROMOTION (11-12) - 08.9904

This course provides the student with an understanding of basic marketing principles and training for entry-level job positions in the exciting, constantly changing fields of advertising and promotion. Students will experience different advertising methods to reach target audiences including, newspaper, radio, TV, Internet, mail, outdoor and special promotion events. Specific skills will help students to create, produce, and effectively evaluate different advertising and promotional strategies. Students taking marketing classes have the opportunity to participate in the DECA Organization. DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

CUSTOMER SERVICE (10-12) - 08.0710

Developing customer satisfaction and loyalty is the focus of the Customer Service course. The students will gain an understanding of the skills, attitudes, and thinking patterns needed to win customer satisfaction and loyalty. Learn and refine tasks necessary for success in the service industry. Work with local businesses and prepare for job opportunities.  Develop service strategies, refine service skills, and gain experience to calmly aid customers in decision making. Students taking marketing classes should have the opportunity to participate in the DECA organization (student marketing leadership association). DECA-related activities and curricula can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

ECONOMICS FOR MARKETING (10-12) - 08.0601

This course focuses on the study of economic problems and the methods by which societies solve them. Characteristics of the market economy of the United States, its function in the world, and methods of applying economics to one’s life will be explored.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR MARKETING (10-12) - 08.0301

Students will gain an understanding of the marketing and management principles necessary to start and operate their own business. They will develop an awareness of the opportunities for small business ownership and develop the planning skills needed to open a small business. Students will become aware of the traits and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Students will gain an awareness of knowledge needed in research, planning and regulations affecting the small business and the means of financing a small business. They will understand the specific strategies of business management and marketing and the economic role of the entrepreneur in the market system. Entrepreneurship is designed for students enrolled in business and marketing education, and/or other courses, who have an interest in developing the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for successful entrepreneurs.

FASHION MERCHANDISING A (10-12)/B (10-12) - 08.0101
The Fashion Merchandising course is an introductory course that teaches the concepts of entry-level business and fashion fundamentals.

The following list of skill standards prepares the student in fashion merchandising with the fundamentals of: basic fashion concepts and marketing terminology, fashion cycles, key components of the fashion industry, retail merchandise categories, fashion promotion and fashion careers. Students taking marketing classes should have the opportunity to participate in the DECA organization (Student Marketing Leadership Association). DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.

The student in Fashion Merchandising B will learn about the fundamentals of elements and principles of design, color theory, wardrobing, fashion marketing, basic fashion and business concepts, size categories, and caring for clothing.

FASHION MERCHANDISING ADVANCED (11-12) - 08.0199

The Fashion Merchandising Advanced course is designed to provide the serious fashion student with knowledge of the various business functions in the fashion industry. Students in fashion merchandising will gain a working knowledge of promotion, textiles, merchandising math, selling, visual merchandising, and career opportunities.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETING (10-12) - 08.7999

The International Marketing course is an introductory course that teaches the concepts of entry-level marketing/business functions in an international marketing environment. Students in International Marketing will learn about marketing and business fundamentals, selling, financing, product/service planning, information management, buying, distribution, pricing, promotion, risk management, economics, communications, marketing math, and marketing operations.

LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT A & B (10-12)/LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES (11-12) - 08.0211

In Leadership Management A and B students will understand the concepts of leadership and the supervisory roles, planning, decision-making, group and organizational dynamics, and functions in an organization. This class teaches how to be an effective leader. Concepts of goal setting, motivation, time management, and other interpersonal skills are taught. Classmates with these skills could become very effective within the student leadership organizations in the high schools. Students may be eligible to receive three (3) credits of concurrent enrollment at a local college if the student completes both semester A and B courses. Dixie State College has presently approved this course.

This class teaches how to be an effective leader. Concepts include goal setting, motivation, team building, time management, conflict resolution, communication, ethics, diversity and much more. Students may be eligible to receive three (3) credits of concurrent enrollment at Utah Valley University.

MARKETING INTRODUCTION (8-9) - 08.0707

An introductory course which will expose students to the fundamental concepts of marketing. Students will be introduced to a wide range of Marketing Education courses related to the Marketing Pathway, Marketing Careers, and DECA –Student Leadership Organization. Students will evaluate interpersonal communication concepts and skills. This course will clearly define the marketing concept and lead students into a marketing education career pathway. Students may have the opportunity to participate and compete in DECA competitions and activities as allowed by district policy. Students will be shown what marketing courses are available upon completing this introductory course.

MARKETING I (10-12) - 08.0711

Marketing I is the foundation for all marketing courses. Students will learn basic principles that lead to careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Students will be introduced to the world of marketing including the free enterprise system. The seven core functions of marketing will be examined: Marketing Planning, Marketing-Information Management, Pricing, Product/Service Management, Promotion, Channel Management, and Selling. A central focus throughout the course will be the development of soft skills including teamwork, oral communication, written communication, decision-making, and emotional intelligence. Students should have the opportunity to participate in DECA, a student organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes. 

MARKETING II (11-12) - 08.0709

This project-based course allows students to develop and demonstrate management level marketing skills. Students will learn advanced marketing principles then demonstrate proficiency by completing a marketing project. The majority of class time should be spent by students completing their marketing project. Examples of projects include: creating an advertising or public relations campaign, developing a business plan, conducting market research for a business and making suggestions for improvement, or completing an official DECA written project.  Each project will include a written and presentation component.

REAL ESTATE (10-12) - 08.1701

Students will be introduced to real estate basics that include the scope of the real estate business, usage of land, land description, ownership, contracts, deeds, mortgages, title search and closes, liens, financing sources, the appraisal process, investments in real estate, and the sales and marketing process. Students will broach real estate marketing and sales through ethics, human, employee, and customer relations, use of product knowledge, and use of advertising and the media. Exposure to real estate terminology, forms, and contracts is an integral part of this class.

The Travel and Tourism course provides the student with an understanding of one of the largest industries in the world. Specific applications include the evolution of the tourism industry, destination geography, airlines, international travel, travel by rail, car rentals, cruising, hospitality industry, tours, meetings, and marketing and sales.
