BUSINESS COMMUNICATION I | BUSINESS COMMUNICATION II

Students gain a solid communication base, so they are able to function effectively in any course of study and in our global society.

Business communication impacts all aspects of our lives. This introductory course will teach students to communicate in a clear, courteous, concise, complete and correct manner on both personal and professional levels. Competency will be developed in oral, written, interpersonal, technological, and employment communication. Listening skills will be incorporated throughout the semester. The overriding goal is to provide students with a solid communication base, so they are able to communicate effectively.

STANDARD 1
Students will identify the communication process and practice effective nonverbal communication skills.

Students realize that communication is everywhere through this hands-on activity and express themselves through their work.

Students will communicate using correct usage and mechanics.

Students will develop and practice effective oral communication skills.

Students will develop reading strategies that will improve speed, comprehension, and

Students learn how to follow written and verbal instructions.

VOCABULARY AND HOMONYMS
Students learn the advantages and disadvantages of one-way and two-way communication using Tinker Toys.

Students will compose effective written communication.

Students will develop and practice proficient listening skills.

Students will apply basic social communication skills in personal and professional situations by demonstrating competence, ethics, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Students will integrate all forms of communication in the successful pursuit and retention of employment by creating an employment portfolio.

BUSINESS COMMUNICATION II
This advanced course will build upon the skills acquired in Business Communication I. Students will focus on additional methods of constructive communication skills. Competency will again be developed in oral, written, social, technological, employment, and organizational communication with listening skills incorporated throughout the semester. The goal is to provide students with a practical, proficient portfolio consisting of a resume, job application, and an oral presentation. Students will complete the course with a greater understanding of the impact of technology and the need for effective communication skills to advance in a business career.

  BUSINESS ARTICLES
Students are exposed to various business magazines and will scan magazines to find an article, summarize what they have read, write using MLA style, and present orally to the class.

Students will compose an effective research paper using the writing process.

JOB INTERVIEW
Students learn aspects of interviewing for a job and in the course of the lesson, students do all of the work.

JOB PROCESS PORTFOLIO
Students complete a portfolio assignment over the course of Business Communication II. Portfolio is presented last day of term for grading.

STANDARD 6
Students will develop organizational communication skills through the development of leadership, personal ethics, and customer-business relationships.

BUSINESS STATE APPROVED TEXTBOOKS

Schools need to purchase basal/core or recommended primary materials that have gone through an independent alignment to the Utah Core. Schools may still purchase materials not listed on the state RIMs list as long as they have been reviewed and approved by their local school board.

Resources are available due to the efforts and submissions of teachers throughout the state of Utah. They have been collected your use, modify as needed.
