Our Mission

Business and Marketing Education prepares students for employment and/or continuing education opportunities through technical instruction in the classroom, experiential education in the laboratory, student internships, and through leadership and personal development by participating in student leadership organizations. The area of study places an emphasis on accounting, finance, administrative and technical support, entrepreneurship, management, hospitality and tourism, human resources management and marketing.

Business and Marketing Education Pathways

The Pathways are based on the National Career Clusters in Business Management & Administration, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, Transportation, and Distribution & Logistics. By taking Business and Marketing Education courses, students develop the academic knowledge and technical skills to successfully advance to the fast-paced business world.

In the U.S., there are nearly 28 million small businesses, employing more than 47 million people. As technology in business advances and the complexity of business increases, so does the need for savvy business professionals.

Throughout the state of Utah, business professionals are affecting and making significant contributions to the economic development of the state. In fact, professional and business services makeup nearly 13 percent of Utah's employment base.

Below are the five Pathways in Business and Marketing Education:

Student Leadership Organization

DECA and FBLA are secondary education associations that provides hands-on leadership development. The organizations build self-confidence, work attitudes, and communication skills. Members are involved in service projects, attend conferences to teach leadership skills to chapter members, and have the opportunity to compete at regional, state, and national competitions each year where students build skills in business and marketing related activities. Events are judged by individuals from the business community.

DECA

While involved in DECA, students learn how to develop, price, place, and promote products in the right business setting.

In 2013, over 150 students participated in competitive events at the DECA National Leadership Conference. Twenty-five students were awarded medals in various competitions.

Utah Collegiate DECA is postsecondary education association of marketing students that focuses on leadership development, competition, and community involvement. Utah Collegiate DECA promotes student growth in career identification and development, understanding our economic system, leadership development, understanding one’s role in society, and enhancing one’s self-development and self-esteem. Utah Collegiate DECA helps students develop skills and competence for their careers.

FBLA
Future Business Leaders of America provides students with opportunities for leadership, community involvement, business partnerships, and competition with other students in events ranging from Public Speaking to Job Interview to Parliamentary Procedures. There are two annual conferences—one focused on leadership for the school officers and one focused on competition for the members. The competition conference extends for three days and hosts over 1,600 students statewide. Winners from each of the 40 events qualify to compete at the national level.

National Recognition

DECA’s scholarship program provides over $250,000 in scholarships at an International Career Development Conference each year. More than fifty corporations provide scholarships throughout the DECA Scholarship Program. Each year, Utah has several students who are awarded scholarships for their academic excellence.

In 2014, 223 Utah students attended the FBLA National Leadership Conference, where 15 students placed in the top ten in the nation for their extraordinary achievement in their FBLA events.

Career Participation/Economic Development

Each course in Business and Marketing Education prepares students to advance toward higher education, as well as acquire immediate job skills. Students learn how to become productive employees and gain the academic skills to increase their earning potential while still in high school.

  • In 2014, over 13,000 students were awarded a CTE Skill Certificates in Business and Marketing, indicating a high level of performance.

Our vision is to see that every student receives the academic knowledge and technical skills needed to be successful in a business and/or marketing career. In Business and Marketing Education students will develop essential career preparation skills through technical and experiential education, as well as personal leadership opportunities.
