Welcome

The State Board of Education is raising the bar of performance expectations through higher, more rigorous standards, informed and aligned assessments, and supporting students and educators with targeted academic feedback. The Board is doing so as part of its overall mission to ensure all students are prepared for college and careers in today’s economy.

Historically Utah has had a set of core standards for all the academic areas taught in our K-12 public schools. The new Utah Core Standards in English language arts and mathematics establish a framework for high quality instruction. They help Utah teachers ensure academic achievement for Utah students by defining the essential knowledge, concepts, and skills to be mastered at each grade level or within critical content areas. They are like a set of building codes. They define what students should know and do to as they move on to post-secondary training, college, or a career.

During the transition to the new English language arts and mathematics Utah Core Standards, students will learn more difficult subject matter and teachers will receive detailed information about their own performance through new educator evaluation systems. Establishing higher standards for students, teachers, and leaders, and providing the necessary resources to achieve these standards, is fundamental to ensuring all students are prepared for today’s world.
