Educator Quality & Licensing

About EYE Requirements

The Entry Years Enhancement (EYE) is a structured support program for Level 1 teachers as they fulfill the requirements for a Level 2 professional license. EYE provides novice teachers with school, district, and state support for a three-year period. All new teachers are required to participate and all requirements must be completed within the first three years of service. The goal of the EYE program is to encourage Level 1 teachers to develop successful teaching skills and strategies as described in the Utah Professional Teacher Standards (UPTS) with assistance from experienced colleagues. Upon successful completion of three years of service and all EYE requirements, the school/district may recommend the new teacher for a Level 2 Utah Professional Educator License. If all EYE requirements have not been met, the school/district may request a one-year extension at their discretion.

Who Must Complete EYE?

All teachers with a Level 1 Utah Educator License and fewer than three years of successful experience as a licensed teacher must complete the EYE requirements.

Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL) candidates and teachers completing an internship do not begin three years of service in the EYE program until after they have earned a Level 1 license.

Educators applying for a Utah Educator License who have a license from another state and fulfill Utah’s requirements will be granted an initial Level 1 license. A teacher with three or more years of teaching experience may be recommended for a Level 2 license after a year of service in Utah and the recommendation of the employing charter school or district
