Alternative Routes to Licensure
Eligibility
Eligibility Requirements for a Secondary Education License (Middle School, Jr. High School, or High School)
To be admitted to Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL) a secondary education candidate must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a MAJOR directly related to a subject that is taught in Utah secondary schools. For Example: To qualify to be hired to teach English, applicants must have a degree major in English. To be hired to teach art, participants must have a degree major in art, etc.
Utah has a general shortage of licensed teachers in the following areas: Mathematics, Science, Special Education, Elementary Education, Early Childhood (kindergarten)
Utah does not have a serious shortage of licensed teachers in the following areas: Social Studies (history, geography, political science, economics) Physical Education, Health, Business and Marketing Education, Family and Consumer Science
VIEW SUBJECT AREA ENDORSEMENTS
Although Educator Quality & Licensing offers endorsements in some social studies subjects, very few high schools offer the following subjects as a course of study.
- Anthropology
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Philosophy
Individuals with degree majors in the above four areas are not eligible for Secondary Education licenses through Alternative Routes to Licensure.

- Find full time or half time employment in a Utah school district, charter school, or accredited private or parochial school after applying to Alternative Routes to Licensure and receiving eligibility letters.
