Alternative Routes to Licensure
Eligibility
Eligibility Requirements for an Early Childhood License (Kindergarten only) or an Elementary Education License
To be admitted to Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL), an Early Childhood or Elementary Education candidate must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education with transcripts documenting a minimum of 27 semester credits and a maximum of 38 credits (or 40-60 credits on the quarter system) dispersed among the following elementary education curriculum content areas. All content areas must be represented with at least some credit. When counting credits in each area do not exceed the maximum. No category may be empty and no grade lower than C can be counted (no C- grades)
Up to six (6) semester content credits in science (e.g. biology, chemistry, geology, physics)
Up to Nine (9) semester content credits in mathematics (e.g. Mathematics 1010 or higher)
Up to Nine (9) semester content credits in reading/language arts (e.g. composition, literature)
Up to Nine (9) semester content credits in social studies (e.g. history, government, geography
Up to Three (3) semester content credits in fine arts (music, art, drama, dance)
Up to Two (2) semester content credits in physical education or health.

- Find full time or half time employment in a Utah school district, charter school, or accredited private or parochial school after applying to Alternative Routes to Licensure and receiving eligibility letters.
(Elementary Education participants take ten teacher preparation course as part of the licensing process after they are hired. Early childhood participants [kindergarten only] take eleven courses)
