English Endorsement

Inservices/College Course Work/Demonstrated Competency

Endorsement Form - PDF

A teacher with a major or minor in English will receive endorsement to teach secondary English courses if the methods courses below are covered in that major.   An endorsement to teach English without a major or minor in English requires a minimum of 24 hours of either approved college coursework or approved inservice classes.  Coursework must include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Personal writing (should include both narrative and expository).

  • Methods of teaching writing (using holistic methodology, i.e., integrating the teaching of critical thinking, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and the language skills of capitalization, punctuation, spelling, diction, syntax and grammar, etc., as they are experienced within the context of the writing process).

  • Methods of teaching literature (using holistic methodology, i.e., integrating the teaching of critical thinking, listening, speaking, reading, and writing).  Newer approaches, such as reader response strategies, should be included rather than limiting methodology to traditional literary analysis.

  • Secondary developmental reading (including decoding strategies, schema theory, metacognition, comprehension strategies, and vocabulary development in relationship to reading processes).

  • Reading in the content area (knowledge and application of reading processes and study skills as they apply to a variety of texts and subject-specific materials).

  • Survey of American literature (from the Puritan period to the present, including all genres; i.e., novel, poetry, short story, nonfiction, essay, etc.).

  • Survey of British literature (from the Angelo-Saxon period to the present, including all genres; i.e., novel, poetry, short story, nonfiction, essay, etc.).

  • Adolescent literature as it reflects the psychosocial development of the adolescent (emphasizing the most modern young adult reading materials and including all genres; i.e., novel, poetry, short story, nonfiction, essay, etc.).

  • Computer technology (i.e., for teacher management systems, word-processing, and the implementation of school writing labs).
