Certification Requirements for Utah Educators

Acceptable Composite Majors, Majors and Minors For Teaching

In preparing individuals to meet certification requirements for teaching on the secondary level, institutions, unless exempted, may recommend only those candidates who have completed an approved program in acceptable subject-matter fields.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

  1. Composite Major: A composite major shall include not fewer than 46 semester or 69 quarter hours of credit distributed in 2 or more related subjects contained in an approved certification program.*

  2. Major: A teaching major, as used herein, shall include not fewer than 30 semester or 45 quarter hours of credit derived from required and elective courses offered in a given subject field. At least one-half of the credit must be from upper division course work. The teaching major must be in a subject field contained in an approved certification program.*

  3. Minor: A teaching minor shall include not fewer than 16 semester or 24 quarter hours of credit derived from required and elective courses offered in a given subject field or service area. The teaching minor must be in a subject field or service area of an approved certification program.*

*Programs offered by Utah institutions shall have been approved by the Utah State Board of Education. Programs offered by institutions outside the state shall be evaluated in accordance with standards applying to Utah institutions.
