Course Description
The Technology, Life, and Careers (TLC) core course is an integrated exploratory program. The purpose is to allow students to be involved in activity-centered lessons that explore careers, utilize technology, and develop beginning skills. The course introduces students to career exploration and selection processes and provides information regarding additional courses and training related to the students' career fields of interest. The applied technology areas of agriculture, business, family and consumer sciences, health sciences and health technology, information technology, marketing, economics, and technology education are explored. The overall goals of TLC focus on 1) Self-Knowledge, 2) Education and Occupation Exploration, and 3) Career Planning

Core Standards of the Course
Standard 1
The student will develop self-knowledge and skills related to the world of work and careers.

Objective 1-1
Acquire self-knowledge related to education and career exploration.

  • Identify personal likes, dislikes, abilities, and talents.
  • Review and assess personal learning styles.
  • Identify how the ability to manage personal resources (e.g., time, money, talents) affects the ability to achieve personal goals.
  • Correlate the relationship of self-knowledge and personality types to career fields.

Objective 1-2
Explain the role of work and society.

  • Identify the importance of work to society and the environment.
  • Describe economic contributions workers make to society.
  • Recognize the importance of academic and career skills in the work world.
  • Identify effects of societal, economic, and technological change on careers.
  • Describe the relationship between work and economic and societal needs.

Objective 1-3
Recognize the effects of changing gender roles on careers.

  • Appreciate the similarities and differences among people.
  • Describe advantages and challenges of non-traditional careers.
  • Recognize the effects of changing gender roles on careers.
  • Describe advantages of taking courses related to personal interests, regardless of gender.
  • Identify stereotypes, biases, and discriminatory behaviors that may limit opportunities in certain careers.

Objective 1-4
Identify and utilize the decision making/problem solving process.

  • Identify the decision making/problem solving process.
  • Explore how decisions about education and work impact other life decisions.
  • Identify possible consequences of decisions.
  • Practice problem solving skills and explore ways to develop independence and take responsibility.

Standard 2
The student will develop a basic awareness of business careers and utilize current business technology.

Objective 2-1
Develop basic skills in business software applications.

·         Use word processing software features to open, save, print, cut & paste, spell check, bold, underline, change fonts, insert graphics, change line spacing, search & replace, and change margins.

·         Use spreadsheet software features to add, subtract, insert & delete rows and columns, copy & move, and perform basic math functions.

  • Use word processing software to perform desktop publishing activities including using template files, creating documents with graphics, text, and white space, graphic manipulation, and use of scanned images and digital camera images.
  • Use presentation software features to create a slide show including graphics, backgrounds, transitions, and font changes.

Objective 2-2
Demonstrate basic Internet skills.

  • Understand the Internet is a network.
  • View HTML code to demonstrate computer programming. Explore virtual tours.
  • Define basic internet vocabulary including URL, browser, search engine, etc.
  • Use a browser and search engine.
  • Save graphics from the Internet to be used in other applications.

Objective 2-3
Develop basic 10-key skills

  • Demonstrate proper 10-key technique.
  • Demonstrate 10-key functions +, -, *, /.

Objective 2-4
Develop basic business skills and explore a variety of business careers.

  • Complete a job application and participate in a job interview.
  • Explain workplace etiquette and good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Examine business careers.

Objective 2-5
Develop cashiering skills

  • Demonstrate how to make change and count back change.
  • Understand sales tax and payroll deductions.

Objective 2-6
Operate a simulated business.

  • Determine what product or service the business will provide.
  • Market the product or service.
  • Organize business leadership and establish employee work responsibilities using skills learned previously in the class.

Objective 2-7
Explore the relationship and impact of information technology in the business arena.

  • Recognize the use of information technology systems in all facets of society.
  • Explain how the issues of ethics, privacy, security, and copyright law apply to the use of information technology.
  • Identify the parts of a computer.  Hardware and software.
  • Explain proper maintenance/repair of computers.
  • Demonstrate proper scanner and digital camera use.
  • Identify the audience, purpose, and appropriate application for multimedia presentations.
  • Explore careers related to information technology, i.e. technical support, interactive media, web developer, database administration, and network administrator.

Objective 2-8
Explore the relationship and impact of economics in business.

  • Recognize that resources are limited and wants/needs are unlimited.
  • Recognize that because resources are limited, choices have to be made.
  • Choices have costs, benefits, and consequences.
  • Discuss types of economic choices used in business.
  • Demonstrate check writing and check register skills including recording deposits.

Objective 2-9
Explore the relationship and impact of agricultural and natural resources in business.

  • Explore career opportunities in agricultural production and processing, agricultural mechanics, horticulture, and natural resources.
  • Recognize the sources of food and fiber and the processes that are used to deliver them to consumers.
  • Calculate the cost of off-farm items (agribusiness) for the average consumer and where the food dollar goes.
  • Differentiate between consumer facts and opinions when purchasing agricultural items.
  • Explain how grains are grown and processed into cold cereal.
  • Explain how supply and demand affects the marketplace and prices.
  • Search the Internet to explore businesses related to agriculture.

Objective 2-10
Explore health care careers in the Health Informatics pathway, including but not limited to: medical coder, epidemiologist, medical office administrative assistant, transcriptionist.

Objective 2-11
Explore the relationship and impact of marketing in business.

  • Explain the four P’s of marketing (product, pricing, promotion and placement) and explain how they are used in business.
  • Identify products in the categories of goods, services or information.
  • Create a marketable product using correct design principles, appropriate pricing rationale, and promotional techniques.
  • Identify business careers related to marketing.

Standard 3
The student will develop basic skills related to family and consumer sciences and skills necessary to enhance independence and a positive self-concept.

Objective 3-1
Analyze the essential skills that enhance independent living.

  • Explore effective personal verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Recognize acceptable social behaviors and how to develop social skills.
  • Identify steps of problem-solving.

Objective 3-2
Examine attributes and issues related to family life.

  • Identify various family types and life roles and explain how those roles impact personal goals
  • Describe the importance of balancing a career, a family, and leisure activities.
  • Recognize how individual responsibilities at home contribute to the family's well being.
  • Examine the impact of career choices on family lifestyles and family economics.
  • Identify careers related to and/or working with families.

Objective 3-3
Demonstrate basic skills related to nutrition and food preparation.

  • Demonstrate basic kitchen management, food safety and sanitation.
  • Review the food guide pyramid and the dietary guidelines.
  • Identify nutritional values of food and nutritional information on food labels.
  • Practice food preparation skills.
  • Identify careers related to nutrition and food production.

Objective 3-4
Explore clothing and textile technology.

  • Explore and use textile technology and equipment.
  • Demonstrate consumer skills related to clothing care and construction.
  • Utilize the sewing machine and/or serger to complete a sewing project.
  • Identify careers related to clothing and textiles businesses and industries. .

Objective 3-5
Identify aspects of child development.

  • Identify appropriate child care skills for young children.
  • Identify safety hazards for small children.
  • Develop or utilize age appropriate learning activities for young children.
  • Recognize cause and type of child abuse and identify resources available to support families.
  • Identify careers working with young children.

Objective 3-6
Explore the relationship and impact of agricultural on the family and consumer.

  • Describe the economic impact of agriculture on one's community, the nation, and the world.
  • Understand the sources of food and fiber and the processes that are used to deliver them to the consumer.
  • Explain the values, benefits and issues concerning biotechnology and agriculture.
  • Identify ten food preservation methods and safe food preparation for meat and eggs.
  • Determine facts and fiction about irradiation, e-coli, salmonella, hormones, and pesticide residues.
  • Compare values, benefits, costs, care and difference between natural and synthetic fibers.
  • Generalize connections between fabric/clothing choices and renewable or non renewable resources.
  • Explain the processes involved in the production and manufacturing of fiber (fabric/textiles/clothing).
  • Identify careers associated with agriculture.

Objective 3-7
Explore the relationship and impact of economics on the family and consumer.

  • Identify natural, human, and capital resources.
  • List resources used in personal, school, and work settings.
  • Identify economic (natural, human, and capital) resources needed for the operation of various businesses i.e. restaurants, grocery stores, clothing stores, etc.

Objective 3-8
Explore health care careers in Therapeutic and Support Services pathways, including but not limited to:  nursing, dietician, physician, medical assistant, dentist, surgical technologist, central services technician.

Objective 3-9
Explore the relationship and impact of information technology on the family and consumer.

  • Recognize the use of information technology systems in all facets of society.
  • Explain how the issues of ethics, privacy, security, and copyright law apply to the use of information technology.
  • Explore information technology applications in the home and for the consumer, i.e. “smart” homes & appliances, nanotechnology, etc.

Objective 3-10
Explore the relationship and impact of marketing on the family and consumer.

  • Discuss how a person can successfully market him/herself when applying for a job.
  • Run a company simulation utilizing the four principles of marketing (product, price, promotion and placement), i.e. restaurant, clothing factory, child care center
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of marketing strategies.
  • Identify marketing careers in the area of family and consumer science.

Standard 4
The student will examine current technologies and safety practices in industry.

Objective 4-1
Examine current communication technologies, their impacts on society and the environment and related careers.

  • Safely use the tools and equipment in the communication activities.
  • Explore the communication technologies used in our world: i. e. Audio, Design, Geographic information Systems (GIS), Graphic, and Video.
  • Describe technology careers related to communication.

Objective 4-2
Explore current manufacturing technologies, their impacts on society and the environment and related careers.

  • Explore the manufacturing technologies used in our world: i. e. Design, Production and Fabrication, Research and Development.
  • Safely use the tools and equipment in the manufacturing activities.
  • Describe technology careers related to manufacturing.

Objective 4-3
Describe different construction technologies, their impacts on society and the environment and related careers.

  • Explore the Construction technologies used in our world: i. e. Architectural Design, Structural engineering, and Commercial and Residential Construction.
  • Safely use the tools and equipment in the construction activities.
  • Describe technology careers related to construction.

Objective 4-4
Examine current transportation technologies, their impacts on society and the environment and related careers.

  • Explore the Transportation technologies used in our world, i.e. Land Transportation, Marine Transportation, and Air and Space Transportation.
  • Safely use the tools and equipment in the Transportation activities.
  • Describe technology careers related to transportation.

Objective 4-5
Explain current energy and power technologies, their impacts on society and the environment and related careers.

  • Explore the different Energy and Power technologies used to do work i.e. Combustion Engine, Electric Motor, Wind Power, etc.
  • Safely use the tools and equipment in the Energy and Power activities.
  • Describe technology careers related to energy and power.

Objective 4-6
Explore the relationship and impact of agricultural and natural resources on technology.

  • Explain the application of Global Positioning System (GPS) to agriculture
  • Demonstrate how to use GPS and satellite technology to find various locations.
  • Understand the economic impact of wildlife and wild lands on one's community, the nation, and the world.
  • Understand the inter-relatedness between people and society and wildlife and wild lands.
  • Identify technology careers and various technology tools/instruments associated with agricultural areas.

Objective 4-7
Explore the relationship and impact of economics on technology.

  • Recognize that choices have costs and benefits.
  • Identify examples of how choices may affect self and others.
  • Discuss how consequences may be immediate or lie in the future.
  • Explain how costs and benefits impact technology.
  • Accurately define the term "opportunity cost" and apply it to decisions made in class and in the workplace.
Objective 4-8
Explore health care careers in the Diagnostic and Biotechnology pathways, including but not limited to:  clinical laboratory technician, radiologic technologist, pharmacist, geneticist, pathologist.

·         Explore health care careers in the Biotechnology Research and Development pathway, including the following: biomedical engineer, microbiologist, pharmacist, and toxicologist.

Objective 9
Explore the relationship and impact of information technology in today's technology world.

  • Explain the issues of ethics, privacy, security and copyright law and how they apply to the use of information technology.
  • Identify and describe the uses of common programming languages, i.e. C++, Visual Basic (VB) and Java.
  • Write detailed instructions (code) to complete a task.
  • Explore programming and software engineering career opportunities..

Objective 10
Explore the relationship and impact of technology on marketing.

  • Explain how technology can be used and the process involved in producing and promoting products.
  • Describe the processes involved in promoting products.
  • Describe how goods, services, and ideas are marketed in the “real world”.
  • Identify careers in the area technology that are used in marketing careers.

Standard 5
The student will utilize occupational information in the career planning process.

Objective 1
Develop an awareness and understanding of five career fields.

  • Learn how aptitudes and abilities relate to broad career fields.
  • Connect occupations to the scientific, artistic, technical, social humanitarian, and business career fields.
  • Incorporate appropriate work-based learning experiences into the classroom, i.e. guest speakers, virtual tours, work simulations, field studies, job shadowing, career fairs, etc.

Objective 2
Locate and use career information.

  • Use career information to explore various occupations of personal interest.
  • Weigh advantages and disadvantages of various school programs for the attainment of career goals.
  • Identify the requirements for secondary and post-secondary programs.

Objective 3
Develop basic employment and job skills.

  • Recognize the importance of personal skills and attitudes to job success.
  • Describe the relationship between personal attitudes, beliefs, abilities, and skills and careers.
  • Practice and develop personal qualities (e.g., dependability, punctuality, getting along with others) that are needed to get and keep jobs.
  • Practice skills to function effectively in a group.

Objective 4
Engage in the career planning process.

  • Recognize how continued learning enhances the ability to achieve goals.
  • Recognize how interest, aptitudes, and abilities relate to the selection of high school courses.
  • Identify school courses that support career interests.
  • Recognize how the skills taught in school are used in various careers.
  • Develop a Student Education Occupation Plan (SEOP).
