HEALTH SCIENCE EVENTS
Dental Spelling
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to spell and define terms associated with Science and Health Technology in the dental field.
Dental Terminology
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to identify, spell, define and apply the terminology and language of Science and Health Technology in the dental field as it relates to prefixes, suffixes, roots and anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and Science and Health Technology.
Medical Spelling
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to define and spell terms associated with Science and Health Technology in the health care community.
Medical Terminology
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to identify, spell, define and apply the terminology and language of Science and Health Technology in the health care community as it relates to prefixes, suffixes, roots and anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and Science and Health Technology.
Medical Math
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to identify, solve, and apply mathematical principles involving temperature, weights, and measures used in the health care delivery system.
Knowledge Tests
To encourage Health Science students to explore and learn about selected health care careers and to assess knowledge in health occupation related areas. The following are the knowledge tests for the current year – Nutrition, Pathophysiology, Human Growth and Development, Pharmacology, and Basic Concepts of Health Care.

Biotechnology
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in medical and health care Biotechnology careers.
Clinical Nursing
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in clinical nursing.
Clinical Specialty
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in a selected health profession.
Dental Assisting
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in dental assisting.
Home Health Aide
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills as a home health aide.
Medical Assisting-Administrative
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in an administrative/clerical position in medical assisting.
Medical Assisting-Clinical
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in clinical medical assisting.
Medical Laboratory Assisting
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in the medical laboratory.
Nursing Assisting
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in nursing assisting.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS
CPR/First Aid
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in team CPR/First Aid in emergency care.
Emergency Medical Technician
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills as a team in emergency medical care.
*First Aid/Rescue Breathing
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in basic first aid and rescue breathing in emergency care.
CERT
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills they will need to respond to their community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster, when emergency services are not immediately available.
Public Health Emergency Preparedness
To encourage Health Science students to work as a team to plan and teach others about public health emergencies.
Epidemiology
To encourage Health Science students to study the effects of health and disease in populations, to improve their scientific literacy, and to provide insights into public health careers.
LEADERSHIP EVENTS
Extemporaneous Health Poster
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their ability to analyze and interpret current health issues and express and communicate this interpretation through development of a poster.
Extemporaneous Speaking
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their ability to organize and present information about an assigned topic in an extemporaneous manner.
Extemporaneous Writing
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their ability to express themselves in writing.
Job Seeking Skills
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to develop and/or refine the skills necessary to apply for and obtain employment.
Medical Photography
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their skills in digital photography while exploring health care careers.
Prepared Speaking
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their skills in speaking and their ability to organize and present facts (or information) about a topic which is related to a specific theme.
Researched Persuasive Speaking
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their skills in researching a health issue, preparing written documentation supporting a thesis, and presenting information orally.
*Interviewing Skills
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to develop and/or refine the skills necessary to apply for and obtain employment.
*Speaking Skills
To encourage Health Science and Health Technology students to improve their skills in speaking and their ability to organize and present facts (or information) about a topic which is related to a specific theme.
TEAMWORK EVENTS
Community Awareness
The purpose of the Community Awareness project is to provide Health Science students with the opportunity to:
- Develop a project to promote community awareness using issues that may be of local, state, and/or national interest.
- Assist communities to become more aware of the pros and cons of the issue selected.
- Promote goodwill and public relations for local HOSA chapters.
Creative Problem Solving
To encourage Health Science students to analyze the problem solving process and to work as a team to apply their problem solving skills in creating a solution to a hypothetical healthcare-related problem.
Forensic Medicine
To encourage Health Science students to analyze careers in forensic medicine and to work as a team to apply their knowledge and skills in creating a solution to a forensic medicine-related problem.
HOSA Bowl
To stimulate and motivate Health Science students to participate in teams and to test their knowledge on various topics and situations in Health Science and Health Technology Education, HOSA, and parliamentary procedure.
Parliamentary Procedure
To develop leadership skills by using parliamentary procedure to conduct a simulated business meeting. This event is based on team competition; therefore, members learn the importance of cooperation and working together through competitive performance.
Career Health Display
To encourage Health Science students to improve their ability to present themselves and communicate career information to others by 3D poster or other representation.
Biomedical Debate
To provide Health Science students with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate skills in debating a biomedical issue.
Medical Reading
To encourage Health Science students to improve their reading comprehension, oral communication, and teamwork skills by reading five textbooks which are assigned annually.
Health Education
To encourage Health Science students to work as a team to plan and teach health-related concepts to another group of students or people in the community.
Public Service Announcement
To encourage Health Science students to analyze the general public’s understanding of a health care issue, and to use technology to produce a public service announcement that informs the community about an important healthcare issue.
RECOGNITION
Outstanding HOSA Chapter
To encourage all HOSA chapters to plan yearly activities in keeping with the goals and purpose of HOSA as described in the national handbook. To encourage the development of local club activities that benefit HOSA members, the school, and the community. To provide documentation of the chapter's activities at the local level and to give recognition to those chapters who fulfill these aims and purposes to the highest degree.
National Recognition Program
To demonstrate the skills, abilities, and attitudes necessary to pursue a career in health care.
Kaiser Permanente Health Care Issues Exam
To encourage Health Science students to investigate, analyze and apply their knowledge of current healthcare-related issues.
National Service Project
To encourage Health Science students to provide community service through the adoption of goals and implementation of strategies related to the support of a national health care organization.
Barbara James Service Award
To encourage Health Science students to become contributing members of their communities.
Outstanding Alumni Member
Each state will be permitted to nominate one alumni member for the Outstanding Alumni award.
Outstanding State Officer
This event is designed to honor one Outstanding State Officer from each HOSA state association in recognition of the officer’s commitment to HOSA and outstanding leadership of his/her state association.
Chapter Newsletter
HOSA has a chapter newsletter competition. The following is the process for submitting and judging the newsletter. The critical aspect is the quality of the information submitted. Many of the articles submitted in the newsletter may appear in the HOSA Magazine.
HOSA Week
To encourage Health Science students to become contributing members of their communities through activities conducted during HOSA week.
