FAQ: NAEP

Q: What is the NAEP? (The National Assessment of Educational Progress)

A: The No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law in January 2002 and reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. Under this legislation, the Commissioner of Education Statistics is to conduct national and state NAEP assessments at least every two years in reading and mathematics in grades 4 and 8.

Q: Is participation in the NAEP voluntary?

A: Federal law specifies that NAEP is voluntary for every student, school, school district, and state.

Q: Does the NAEP report individual or school-level scores?

A: USOE Stands for Utah State Office of Education, Assessment Section. Assessment section is responsible for preparing, distributing and collection results of various assessments across the state of Utah.
