GED Credit

The GED and High School Credit

In Utah, an Adult Education Program may award up to five units of high school credit for successfully passing the GED Test.  At the discretion of the local School District, these credits may be awarded in the CORE CURRICULUM areas as follows:

0 - 1 credit in English.
0 - 1 credit in social studies (excluding United States History and US Government)
0 - 1 credit in mathematics
0 - 1 credit in science
The remaining credits may be awarded as elective credits.

THESE POLICIES APPLY ONLY TO ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMS.

Utah College and University Minimum GED Score Requirement

About 75% of GED examinees indicate they plan to pursue further education and training beyond high school.

According to 2002 survey of college admissions officers performed by the American Council on Education, approximately 97% of colleges and universities accept the GED in lieu of a high school diploma, including every college in Utah. Most colleges also have additional admissions requirements (please contact the college for more information). In addition, the majority of financial aid and scholarship programs are available to GED recipients.

The following sample of colleges and universities accept the GED in lieu of high school diplomas.*  Where they expect higher GPA's from high school graduates they likewise expect higher GED scores in order to enter their postsecondary programs.

  • Brigham Young University............ Diploma or GED is not used for admission. Admittance is based on ACT scores.
  • College of Eastern Utah................ Passing score.
  • Salt Lake Community College....... Diploma or GED is not required for admission.

* Often GED scores become part of a combination of scores required (ie: ACT + GED scores) for admissions to colleges and universities.  Many colleges require potential students to take assessments or tests to determine if the potential students truly have the "ability to benefit" by being there.  Please check with Admissions Offices at the institution you are seeking to attend.

GED and the Military

Although the military does accept individuals with a GED, individuals with a traditional high school diploma have a far greater chance of enlistment.
