SCHOOL LAW AND LEGISLATION

The School Law and Legislation Section at the Utah State Office of Education is responsible for providing information and direction to school districts, other state agencies, and the general public on various issues including school fees, school First Amendment issues, student discipline, grading practices, ethics, and student confidentiality issues.

The Section has responsibility for tracking legislation that impacts education throughout the legislative session. The Section is responsible for drafting and revising State Board of Education administrative rules, including rules on charter schools, instructional materials recommendation procedures, educator licensing, and standardized testing procedures.

The Section also works with the Office of the State Attorney General in addressing legal issues and litigation, and provides support and inservice to school district personnel concerning current legal issues, public education law, educator discipline, professional standards, and legislation.
